Microsoft announces automatic Internet Explorer updates!

Posted: December 16th, 2011 11:21am by Tim Bouchard

Yesterday Microsoft announced on its blog that they will be pushing Internet Explorer browser updates to XP, Vista, and 7 users. The death of IE6 may finally be around the corner. As a programmer I've long been tormented by this dinosaur of a web browser destroying well formatted HTML simply because it wasn't advanced enough to recognize the styling used.

"Today we are sharing our plan to automatically upgrade Windows customers to the latest version of Internet Explorer available for their PC. This is an important step in helping to move the Web forward."

This isn't a perfect solution though, some consumers on not only old browsers, but old platforms (Windows ME / 2000) will still be obvlivous to the world of technology. You can't solve every problem.

This comes a year after Google and other online application providers publicly announced they were going to stop adding backwards coding to comply with these out-dated browsers. Maybe, just Maybe, Microsoft started realizing itself that it was going to have issues building applications in the future with their own former browser pinning them down.

Here is the official blog post: http://windowsteamblog.com/ie/b/ie/archive/2011/12/15/ie-to-start-automatic-upgrades-across-windows-xp-windows-vista-and-windows-7.aspx

For those of you still using IE6, maybe you just want to manually update to IE9 right now? Yes, there's been TWO versions of IE between you and the current world.

I posted popular up-to-date browser options many people already use in a blog post some time ago, check it out: http://www.luminusmedia.com/blog/google-to-phase-out-internet-explorer-6-support/
